The 2022 MotoGP™ season got underway on 6 March. The previous edition ended with the victory of the French Fabio Quartararo on the factory Yamaha followed by the Italian Francesco Bagnaia on a Ducati.
An evocative year with 8 different winners in 18 Grands Prix but which had its most exciting moment with the last race of Valentino Rossi, who with the Valencia GP ended his adventure in MotoGP ™ giving one last performance to fans from all over the world. A career full of exciting races and incredible victories that have transformed him into a timeless icon.
For an important chapter that closes, however, there is another that continues. For the 2022 season, Michelin will still be the only tire supplier for the premier class, and will continue at least until 2026 after the contract extension with the competition organizer Dorna sports.
Since 2016, the year of his return to MotoGP™, Michelin has brought back all its competence and passion for the world of two wheels to the world championship. In the 2021 season, also thanks to the contribution of Michelin tires, 29 new records are set, such as the shortest race or the fastest lap.
The most significant change introduced by Michelin in the 2022 MotoGP™ season concerns the reduction in the number of tires available to each rider. A selection process that was carried out in close collaboration with the riders and teams to reduce the total number of tires available while maintaining the 2021 performance level.
Piero Taramasso, Michelin Motorsport manager, said at the beginning of the season that the "Michelin technical team worked side by side with the drivers to identify the most versatile tires and eliminate those considered excessively specific. In this way the environmental impact will be reduced in how much will there be a reduction in raw materials used and therefore less tires to store and recycle"
For the 2022 season, Michelin is still relying on the models of past seasons, namely the Power Slick and the Power Rain; tires not on the market for the public but for which two models with the same name and similar characteristics have been created for the final consumer.
For each Grand Prix, the drivers have an overall package of 28 Michelin Power slicks at their disposal (15 front and 13 rear) which they can use throughout the entire race weekend for free practice, qualifying, warm-up and the race. The pressure of the slick tires is 1.9 bar (27.55 PSI) for the front and 1.7 bar (24.65 PSI) for the rear.
Each driver is assigned 5 soft tires, 5 medium tires and 5 hard tires for the front tires and 6 soft, 4 medium and 3 hard tires for the rear tires.
To cover free practice, qualifying, warm-up and the race, the riders are given 15 Michelin Power Rain tires (7 front and 8 rear), with a choice of two soft or medium specifications. The pressure of the rain tires is 2.0 bar (29 PSI) for the front and 1.7 bar (24.65 PSI) for the rear.
The main difference that stands out most between the Power Slick and the Power Rain is represented by the tread. The Power Slicks, as the name suggests, have a completely slick cover, without notches, to ensure maximum grip on a dry track. The Power Rains, on the other hand, are equipped with carvings with a fountain sculpture that allow safe water drainage without having to give up the fun on the track.
The Michelin tires used in the world championship differ from those on the market also in size. The Michelin Power Slick and Power Rain in fact have the following dimensions:
12/60-17 for the front and 20/69-17 for the rear tire.
After renewing its relationship with Dorna Sports until 2026, Michelin intends to continue developing new tires for the 2023 championship as well.
In fact, during this season the French manufacturer will continue its work on a new rear carcass that had already been at the center of its efforts in several circuits in 2021. The goal is to introduce it in time for the beginning of 2023 and at the same time also develop the new front, on which Michelin will conduct private tests for the debut in the 2024 season.
For this year all that remains is to focus on all the races that are missing to find out if the Michelin tires will be able to set new records also on the missing circuits of Rio Hondo (Argentina), Twin Ring Motegi (Japan) and Phillip Island (Australia).
