If you think Germany is just endless highways, get ready to change your mind!
Here, every road has a story to tell: from the legendary curves of the Black Forest to the Alpine roads of Bavaria, all the way to the rugged landscapes of the north.
We’ll explore the best motorcycle routes in Germany, but first, let’s take a look at what you need to travel to Germany by motorcycle. Remember, if you’re looking for the right tires for your long trip, check out the GripMoto.it online store.
Tolls
It sounds like a dream, but in Germany, the highways are free for tourists! Just remember to get a Swiss and/or Austrian “vignette” to get there.
Blood alcohol level
Here’s something that beer lovers will find very interesting. The legal limit is 0.5, and checks are quite frequent.
Speed limits
The feature that excites motorcyclists in Germany the most is undoubtedly the absence of speed limits on the highways.
It’s true that there is generally no speed limit, but truly dangerous sections are excluded, and signs will indicate the speed limits that must be observed.
Emissions Sticker and Parking
At the entrance to major cities, you’ll see signs marked “Umweltzone.” If you plan to visit these cities, be sure to find out which sticker you need to enter the Low-Emission Zones (Umweltplakette). P+R (park & ride) facilities, on the other hand, allow you to park your motorcycle and deduct the cost of public transportation from your parking ticket.
Average distance: 400 km

Among the best motorcycle routes in Germany, those in the Schwarzwald are undoubtedly the most famous and picturesque. An exciting ride through scenic routes, forests, hills, and beautiful lakes.
Start in Freiburg for a relaxing walk or to explore Schauinsland.
12 km, 900 meters of elevation gain, and more than 170 curves to navigate on the mountain that hosted motor racing events until the 1980s.
It’s so beautiful that it’s often closed to motorcycle traffic: check the traffic restrictions in effect on weekends and holidays.
Medieval villages and lush forests line the Clock Road (Uhrenstraße), passing through towns such as Furtwangen and Triberg, where the water from the waterfalls flows over the moss in the forest.

We begin the famous B500 Black Forest High Road (Schwarzwaldhochstrasse) in Baden-Baden, a renowned spa town about 100 km further north, before descending toward Freudenstadt. It’s a truly thrilling 60-km route, featuring a series of heart-pounding sections with breathtaking views, but watch out for stretches with very low speed limits and well-placed speed cameras.

FOOD STOP
Generous portions await you at the Hexenlochmühle mill in Furtwangen: local products, cold cuts, sausages, honey, and jams.
For a relaxing stay, you’ll find bike-friendly hotels on Lake Mummelsee, right along the B500 Black Forest Highway.
Recommended detour: a little further north, still in Baden-Württemberg, the Hockenheim Circuit and Heidelberg Castle are well worth a visit.
Heading south again, we stop in St. Georgen in Schwarzwald and Villingen-Schwenningen: less touristy, but perfect for experiencing authentic Germany, with their historic centers and local breweries.
Without a doubt, the stretch leading to Titisee and Schluchsee, with their deep blue waters, is perfect for enjoying a smooth ride and a cup of coffee with a view of the lake.
Open roads, wide curves, perfect visibility and pavement, all set against a landscape that alternates between dense forests and glimpses of water.

FOOD STOP
Don’t miss the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, the authentic Black Forest cake.
Try it in traditional gasthaus, along with hearty dishes like Schäufele (roasted pork shoulder), in a super cozy atmosphere.
You can usually stay overnight here or in small hotels along the route (with parking for motorcycles).
Unfortunately, it’s already time to head back, but we decide to avoid the main road and take a more scenic route, passing by Mount Feldberg.
South of the Feldberg massif, elevations range from 600 to 1,400 meters. As we climb, the temperature drops and the ride becomes more technical.
Gentle curves along quieter roads take us back to Freiburg, bringing to a close a loop through the Black Forest that is nothing short of thrilling.
Without a doubt, the hottest summer months are perfect for soaking up the sun and enjoying hikes or bike rides in pleasant weather. Come September and October, you can lose yourself in the magical colors and food festivals.
Average distance: 1,000 km

Bavaria is definitely biker-friendly, with plenty of hotels and routes designed for motorcyclists, magnificent views to admire along the well-maintained federal highways (Bundesstraße), crystal-clear lakes, lush nature...and rivers of beer!
We kick things off with a bang, navigating the Alpine passes of Germany’s oldest motorcycle route: the Alpenstrasse. From Salzburg to Lake Constance, over 400 km of pure motorcycling thrills await us, spread out over a couple of days.
Near Berchtesgaden, don’t miss the Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), Hitler’s lavish summer chalet, and the charming towns of Mittenwald and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The fresh air and adrenaline rush of these alpine trails will give you the thrill of reaching the summit, taking off your helmet, and enjoying the spectacular view of the valley.
Kehlsteinhaus
From Füssen, a detour is a must to catch a glimpse of the first castles that will lead us to the famous Romantic Road: Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein—the latter of which inspired the Disney castle—are certainly worth seeing.
We’ll ride the Alpenstrasse all the way to Lake Constance (Bodensee), enjoying the Austrian shore from Bregenz to Lindau and avoiding the northern section, which is generally busier. Upon arrival by motorcycle, we are greeted by roads that run along the lake, winding through lush nature and small towns nestled gently on the water, with their picturesque alleys, half-timbered houses, and flower-filled islands.
Look up: if we’re lucky, we’ll see some airships flying overhead. In fact, Friedrichshafen is home to the Zeppelin Museum, dedicated to air travel.
FOOD STOP
Staying near Lake Constance isn’t exactly cheap, but you can find affordable hotels or Gasthofs (inns) where you can enjoy your stay and savor the local cuisine. It’s a mix of influences from the surrounding areas: Käsknöpfle (cheese dumplings) from Liechtenstein, potato rösti from Switzerland, and many other delicacies.
We continue along the Romantic Road (Romantische Strasse) on our motorcycles, surrounded by the scents of the fields and the colors of the villages, winding through paths that seem straight out of a fairy tale. When visiting the castles, we recommend setting aside enough time for your visit and booking in advance.
Neuschwanstein Castle
From Steingaden, with its Rococo-style Wieskirche, the route heads up toward Landsberg am Lech and Augsburg, cities closely linked to the rivers and canals that flow through them.
Nördlingen and Dinkelsbühl are just a few of the colorful villages we’ll come across along the way, but Rothenburg ob der Tauber is undoubtedly a gem of medieval art that’s not to be missed, featuring a year-round Christmas shop (Angel Wohlfarth).
FOOD STOP
Be sure to try Sneeballe, traditional fried pastries topped with powdered sugar, chocolate, or hazelnuts, a specialty of Franconia.
When it comes to accommodations, you’ll find plenty of charming, atmospheric inns, historic mansions, hotels, and B&Bs throughout the area.

Our romantic itinerary culminates in Würzburg, a charming city on the Main River in the heart of Franconia.
The rolling hills covered in vineyards make this region the home of wines like Riesling. Don’t worry—we still have Munich for beer!
After stopping at various villages and castles, we arrive in Nuremberg (Nürnberg) to lose ourselves in its narrow streets and romantic views, and then on to our final stop: Munich (München).
By day, the BMW Museum and the English Garden, where you can swim and surf.
In the evening, Marienplatz and the most famous beer halls in the city center: HB, Augustiner, Paulaner.
September and October usually bring beautiful weather, the roads are less crowded, and the cold of winter is still far off. What’s more, during this time of year, you might even consider taking a detour to immerse yourself in the timeless spirit of Munich’s Oktoberfest.

The wind and the open road take us from the Baltic Sea to the North Sea on our motorcycle trip through northern Germany, from Lower Saxony to Schleswig-Holstein.
These are regions with surreal and unique landscapes, where modern port life finds a balance with the tranquility of unspoiled nature.
We’ll be able to experience sunsets at 10 p.m. and enjoy the coastline as the sun dips into the North Sea, past coastal roads and solitary lighthouses.
The journey begins in Rostock, offering a first glimpse of the Baltic Sea and the region’s long-standing maritime tradition.
A quick stroll down the main street, Kröpelinerstraße, and a stop at the Brunnen der Lebensfreude (Fountain of Joy) before heading on to what was once the most important of the Hanseatic cities: Lübeck.

We ride through endless fields, past lakes, and through small villages, and we begin to realize why a motorcycle is the perfect way to explore these places.
In Lübeck, we pass through the ancient Holstentor, the city gate that once protected the Altstadt—the beautiful historic center bordered by the river and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For an alternative day trip on a sunny day, park your motorcycle and take the ferry to Travemünde: enjoy a stroll along the beach with the fresh ocean air and visit the oldest lighthouse on the German Baltic coast.
FOOD STOP
In Rostock, be sure to try the marinated herring with potatoes at the small restaurants and bars lining the canal.
In coastal towns, enjoy a Fischbrötchen (a sandwich with fresh fish, often herring) at the beach bars.
Don’t miss Lübeck’s marzipan, and for lodging: look for local guesthouses in the historic center, which are perfect for parking your motorcycle and getting around on foot.
We travel through the Holstein region of Switzerland, from Lübeck toward Fehmarn, through a picturesque hilly landscape renowned for its spectacular natural colors.
The entire region offers diverse natural scenery and a rich variety of wildlife, and is popular for hiking, cycling, horseback riding, and water sports.
To reach Fehmarn, we cross the famous bridge over the sea: a crosswind, an endless horizon, and the feeling of floating.

As you continue toward Laboe, the road alternates between coastal stretches and gentle curves.
Here, you can visit an original World War II U-boat and the adjacent naval museum.
Along the way, we also come across one of those typical Northern European beaches: California Beach (Strand Kalifornien)—huge, windy, and very picturesque.
Speaking of wind, on beaches all across northern Germany you’ll find Strand Korbs, those typical “beach chairs” that shield you from the constant wind.
They’ll certainly be there in Kiel as well, where we’ll soak up the maritime atmosphere of its canal, which is impressive in both size and shipping traffic.
Strand Korb
We head to the heart of the Baltic Sea, stopping at Maasholm, a small fishing village untouched by mass tourism, and ending in Flensburg, on the border with Denmark, to take in the final sights of the eastern part of our trip through Germany.
We therefore leave the Baltic Sea (Ostsee)—calmer and dotted with bays, cliffs, and lagoons—to plunge into the wilder, rougher North Sea.
Nature stretches as far as the eye can see all the way to Nordstrand, which welcomes us with narrow streets and seawalls that seem to hover between land and water.
Cuxhaven is perfect for a longer stay and endless sunsets that last well into the evening, while Norden has a more contemplative atmosphere.
Throughout Lower Saxony, the coastal landscape changes dramatically in just 6 hours due to the tides.
The sea recedes for miles, and you can walk barefoot through a unique ecosystem of endless mudflats. It’s a must-try!

We then head down toward Bremen, arriving at the historic cities that will take us to the end of our journey, where culture blends with urban energy.
Overnight stay with a beer-themed dinner and a tour of the historic center between the Marktplatz and the Rathaus, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed City Hall.
Final stop: Hamburg, the city of bridges. With over 2,300 bridges, it’s the European city with the most. We wander through the narrow streets and past the typical canal-side cafés for one last evening in true German style.
FOOD STOP
Alternative neighborhoods and biker-friendly spots will be our home base during our stay in these cities.
Along the way, there are plenty of snack bars for a quick bite or small restaurants where you can enjoy Fischsuppe (spicy fish soup) or Aalsuppe (eel soup).
The climate is influenced by the Gulf Stream: thanks to the mild summers, temperatures typically range from 15 to 20°C.
On sunny days, the atmosphere is perfect for exploring the unique landscapes of northern Germany by motorcycle.

Among our tips for long motorcycle trips, advice on tires is a must.
We can’t stress enough that tires are our first point of contact with the road!
Especially in the summer and when fully loaded, the tread depth must be at least 80% to ensure optimal grip in all conditions.
Sport Touring tires guarantee durability, comfort, and safety over long distances.
